Meet the Team

Here are the people who will make it all happen!!

Graham Dowling - Director

Graham has been involved in theatre since he was 16, on and offstage. More recently he has been concentrating on Stage Management, working mostly with DULOG, especially during their Gala shows.

‘I have always had a passion for expressing my faith through drama and I am so thankful for this opportunity in DurhamIt has been my dream for some time to direct a play and for that play to glorify God in an obvious way. From the beginnings of when I got into theatre and even before that I was always amazed at how powerful Christian theatre could be. I suppose groups such as Riding Lights and In Your Face would spring to mind as influences. But as soon as I watched Tales from the Madhouse, I knew I wanted to put it on.

This is his first time directing and he is relishing the chance to unleash his artistic side on his unwitting cast. He hopes you enjoy the show and come away feeling touched by the characters stories and with lots of questions about what they were saying. Remember, it’s not too late to escape the madhouse…

Sarah Mullins - Producer

Sarah has always felt at home on the stage from the age of 8, when she made her debut as the wicked stepmother in Cinderella. Once catching the buzz for theatre, Sarah was rarely away from her school and sixth-form drama departments, performing in productions such as Oliver!, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Wit, and Romeo and Juliet. Since coming to Durham, other commitments have prevented Sarah from getting involved with student theatre until now, however she is absolutely thrilled to have had the opportunity to take on the more backstage role of producing Tales from the Madhouse, a challenge that she has enjoyed tremendously.

"The characters of 'Tales' are somewhat timeless – I can certainly identify with them, with their frustration, longing, pain, confusion, emptiness, bitterness, desire, anger, helplessness… and the numerous questions that they ask of life; I have asked them too. And yet, it has only been through my own encounter with Jesus, and the journey I have embarked on with him as my best friend, that those questions have begun to find answers, and my longings begun to find fulfilment."

Emily Robinson - Tech Director

Philippa Udy - Stage Manager

Philippa has been involved in plays since she was at school where she acted in various productions such as ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, and ‘Anything Goes’. Since the start of this year at Durham she has been involved in the production teams for DULOG’s ‘Sweeney Todd’ in the Gala Theatre, and Bailey Theatre Company’s ‘The Rivals’ and their upcoming production of ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’.

This is her first experience stage managing and her first play in the Assembly Rooms, and she is enjoying the challenge and experience of being involved in a new side of theatre production. She is excited about being involved in this unusual play which brings together her passion for Jesus and love for theatre. She is looking forward to being involved in more similar pieces next year.
